HEAD coach Kevin Sharp reckons Worcestershire’s Joe Clarke “is quite close” to making a decision on his future and insists: “We really want him to stay here.”
The 22-year-old is out of contract at the end of this season with “three or four other clubs” said to be keen on his signature.
Sharp was quick to talk up Clarke's credentials and remains hopeful of retaining the burgeoning talent who created headlines with an unbeaten 177 at Nottinghamshire in June.
That secured a draw against the club the Shropshire-born ace got heavily linked with last season before Trent Bridge boss Mick Newell quashed speculation in September.
Sharp did not reveal any of England Lions international Clarke’s suitors but confirmed an offer had been tabled by Worcestershire who now must play the waiting game.
“Joe was always going to leave his decision until quite late in the season,” said Sharp.
“It is his choice and we haven’t put him under too much pressure to decide. We want him to concentrate on his batting and doing well.
“We are only three weeks away from the end of the season and I am sure he is quite close to making his decision.
“I cannot say too much more, only that we are constantly looking to strengthen the squad and we hope Joe Clarke will be a part of that. We really want him to stay here.
“The call is his. I know clubs are interested in his services and who wouldn’t be? He is a fine player.
“I am not certain but I think there are three or four clubs out there who are quite keen on him.
“He is still a very young man who is learning his trade but he has delivered some outstanding performances and will continue to do so.
“There is every chance he will go on to play at the highest level and I hope that is with Worcestershire.”
