TENNIS stars of the future from clubs across Herefordshire and Worcestershire tasted success at the inter-county final of the Super-G Grand Prix.

The two counties' team of eight and nine-year-olds were thrilled to return from the event, which took place at Oxtalls Indoor Tennis Centre in Gloucester on Sunday, with gold medals.

The winning team beat Gloucestershire and Avon in the final to be crowned the champions.

Van Willerton, the team captain and club development officer for Herefordshire and Worcestershire, said: "Competing lies at the heart of our sport and I was so proud to see our team enjoying the thrill of winning points for the team.

"Our players have really enjoyed traveling around collecting grand prix points - just as the pros on the international tour are doing at Wimbledon at the moment.

"It was so inspiring to see all of our youngsters achieving outstanding personal performances at the weekend."

The team consisted of young up-and-coming tennis hopefuls from clubs in and around the two counties.

Each player earned their place in the team by finishing in the top four of the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Super-G Grand Prix event.

Super-G is a series of events hosted at various clubs around the counties of Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire and Avon.

At the end of the Herefordshire and Worcestershire series, Malvern's Manor Park Lawn Tennis Club's Charlie Norton and Lydia Wright, from Bromsgrove Tennis Club were crowned Super-G Grand Prix boys and girls champions for 2007.

Then, Norton and Wright - along with the next three boys and three girls with the highest number of grand prix points - went on to play at the Inter-County Super-G Champions.

Alongside Norton, the boys' team included Oliver Nunn (Worcester LTC), Tom Scotcher (Hereford Whitecross) and Nicholas Bull (Droitwich TC).

The successful girls team was made up of Wright, Ruth Horsburgh (Worcester LTC), Beth Harris (Barnt Green TC) and Charlotte Fox (Pershore TC).
