STRIKER Alan Connell has turned down a deal at Hereford United to sign for League Two rivals Brentford.

The 24-year-old, who spent 12 months at Edgar Street, has agreed a two-year deal at the Griffin Park club, managed by ex-England captain Terry Butcher.

Former Bournemouth and Torquay forward Connell scored 10 times in 50 appearances for the Bulls last season but wanted to return to his roots.

He said: "I had a good year at Hereford but I wanted to get back to London as it's where I'm from.

"But the opportunity of working for Terry and Andy Scott (assistant manager) was the main factor in why I chose to move."

Connell's departure to the Bees follows the exits of club captain Rob Purdie to Darlington and forward Tim Sills to Torquay United.

The club have also seen defender Tamika Mkandawire join Leyton Orient, while striker Andy Williams appears poised to join Bristol Rovers.

Meanwhile, Hereford have entered the Midland Youth Cup after an absence of three seasons. United have been drawn away against Burton Albion, with the match due to be played before September 30.

They will also play in the Welsh International Tournament from Sunday, July 22.
