DIRECTOR of rugby Adam Drew insists Droitwich will leave nothing to chance in tomorrow’s RFU Midlands Senior Vase final at county rivals Evesham (3pm).
Droitwich have beaten Evesham twice this term as they wrapped up the Midlands Three West (South) title with four fixtures remaining.
A victory at Albert Road will take either side to within one step of a showpiece national final at Twickenham.
Drew says Droitwich have worked hard this week to improve areas of their game after last Saturday’s title-clinching 64-7 rout of Old Leamingtonians.
“We are very excited and privileged to have reached the regional final because we’ve had a very good season and are looking forward to the challenge,” said Drew whose side will be backed by two supporters’ coaches.
“We are not looking further than this game and definitely not thinking about the prospect of being within one match off Twickenham.
"We are going over to Evesham to win, not to come second best.
“It will be a very good game but we have beaten them home and away in the league.”
Evesham are third in the table and were comprehensively beaten 37-3 when they travelled to Droitwich at the end of January.
The Vale side had suffered a 35-19 home loss in October.
Evesham spokesman Nathan Chambers said: “It’s a huge game and we are expecting a large crowd for the occasion.
"There will be marquees, food and drink and it should be a great day. Hopefully we will get a lot of support from the town to cheer us on.”
Droitwich booked their place in the regional final after wins against Ludlow (22-0), Daventry (60-3) and Northampton Casuals (30-20).
Drew has been involved at Droitwich for 12 years, having coached age-group rugby, but stepped up to the top role in the summer after the club’s relegation.
“We have achieved 18 league wins on the bounce but the fundamental difference this season has been the high numbers who have attended training,” said Drew.
“The coaching staff have worked very hard since the summer and the team morale is very good throughout the squad. The players are buzzing with confidence.”
Drew hailed the impact of front-row forward James Shewell who has led Droitwich impressively in his role as captain.
“James is an outstanding captain who is on duty seven days a week and we regularly speak three or four times a day about club matters,” said Drew.
“We are fully prepared. We gave Evesham their three points the last time we met and were very unhappy with ourselves.
"We have improved game by game and got stronger throughout the season. We have been working on areas to improve despite winning 64-7 last weekend.
“I think it will be a forwards game with the backs deciding what the score will be.”
