AISAM Qureshi, the Pershore Tennis Centre star, booked himself a place in the second round at Wimbledon with a fine three-set triumph over Briton Lee Childs.

Qureshi, who is Pakistan's number one ranked player, was making his first SW19 appearance in the singles tournament. He recently helped the Worcestershire club reach the National Premier League finals.

The 27-year-old, who has twice previously played in the Wimbledon doubles, saw off Childs 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6).

Qureshi confidently claimed the first set in 33 minutes and, despite Childs having two break points at the end of the second set, to hold serve for a 2-0 lead.

The third set was keenly fought but Qureshi, who was cheered on by a vocal Pakistan support, never really looked in trouble and won the match in the tie-break.

The Pershore ace is only the second Pakistani, after Haroon Rahim in 1975 and 1976, to win a men's singles match at Wimbledon.

Ian Johnson, chairman of Pershore Tennis Centre, said: "It was wonderful to watch Aisam playing at Wimbledon.

"He has got Marat Safin in the next round which will be an extremely tall order, but we will all be cheering him on."
