ALTHOUGH not his highest score, David Selvey rates his excellent innings of 175 for The Lenches as the best knock of his career.

The opening batsman blitzed West Malvern's bowling attack to all corners as he led his team to a formidable total of 305-6 in the two sides' Worcestershire League Division Six encounter.

Two seasons ago, Johannesburg-born Selvey blasted 186 for The Lenches but he feels his most recent effort was a better innings as it was virtually chanceless.

The 44-year-old said: "During the whole innings, I only gave one half-chance when I skied the ball to third man.

"The guy from slip managed to run back and get a hand to it but couldn't hold on - it would have been a fantastic catch.

"Although it wasn't my highest score, I think it was my best innings because the 186 I scored was in a lower division and I didn't bat as well.

"I was hoping to score a double hundred but West Malvern brought their opening bowler back on when I was trying to hit out a little and I edged the ball to the wicketkeeper."

Selvey, who lives in Grafton Flyford, near Worcester, has been named as our cricketer of the week for his fantastic feat and he wins a £30 voucher to spend in the Fearnley Factory Shop.

It is the second time the shoulder surgeon has picked up the accolade as he was also selected for the prize when he scored his 186.

Even though The Lenches posted a massive total, it still wasn't enough to secure victory as the plucky West Malvern batsmen managed to cling on for a draw.

Selvey said he was disappointed that his efforts didn't lead to a win for his team but admitted the bowlers have struggled to knock sides over recently.

He added: "I opened the batting and we put on around 50 runs for the first wicket.

"Then I added another 200-odd with Stephen McNally, who scored 86, so we were able to post a really competitive total.

"It was disappointing not to go on to win the game but they operated very well to bat out the overs, even though they were only 87-8 at the end of the game.

"Not being able to finish teams off after we have scored a big total has been a bit of a problem for us."

The Lenches are currently second in Divison Two, 36 points behind runaway leaders Hewell.

But Selvey is remaining optimistic his side can secure promotion to Division Five.

With a few more innings like his last one, Selvey will be a very useful weapon to have in their title tilt.
