A PERSHORE driver is one of 100 battling it out for 16 places in the all-female line-up to compete in this summer's prestigious Formula Woman Championship.

Harriet Tyler, 27, has taken part in a gruelling assessment process comprising driving, karting, fitness, a written test and interview.

The next stage is an elimination camp later this month which will uncover the best 16 female drivers in the UK. The top three drivers will gain a free season in the Novice Championship and the other 13 will be required to find sponsorship.

Formula Woman is designed to attract and assist more women to enter the previously male-dominated arena of motorsport and is the only female motor racing championship in the country. The 2007 event will be the only championship in the UK to run on E85, a hybrid bio-ethanol fuel.

The Novice Championship will run over eight races throughout the summer at circuits including Brands Hatch, Snetterton and Silverstone.

Tyler has a tough task ahead of her and, if she stays on track, will be behind the wheel of a 1.6K-series Rover-engine Caterham 7.
