WORCESTER Amateur Boxing Club have honoured a long-serving member for his service to the sport.

Club secretary Derrick Jinks is retiring after nearly 30 years and received his award from president John Curnock at a club tournament.

Jinks came into amateur boxing when his son Lennie started in the ring.

His first position at the club was as vice-chairman and, from the early 1980s, as secretary, eventually becoming the longest-serving secretary in the history of the club.

In that time Jinks became an Amateur Boxing Association official for the Midland counties and an England panel judge at the National Championships.

In 1997, he was elected president and chairman of the West Mercia division of the ABA.

Meanwhile, Alan Edwards, past club vice-chairman and winner of two ABA British titles, received an award for 50 years of membership.
