OLD Vigornians seconds’ Alex Barnes smashed 20 fours and 11 sixes in 171 not out for the third highest score in the Worcester club’s history.

His mid-table team posted 340-5 at Claverley in a 185-run Division Three victory.

The 22-year-old’s previous best was 61 three weeks ago and, along with Phil Mackie’s more sedate 66no, the pair added a club-record 250 for the sixth wicket.

They came together at 90-5 in the 21st over after Amir Hemraj (3-65) made early breakthroughs.

After Dave Mendham and Tasweer Shah fell in quick succession for 29 and 28 respectively, OVs looked in trouble.

But Barnes, playing for the King’s School old boys despite being an ex-Royal Grammar School pupil, and Mackie added 123 in 19 overs and 127 in the final 10 as the Claverley wheels came off.

Claverley needed a big score from captain Kamran Choudhary but Mackie bowled him for 22.

Although Kashif Hussain scored an enterprising 55, the Shropshire side’s innings petered out to 155 in the 34th over.

James Hayward-Meek (2-16) bowled a superb opening spell and Tim Race took 3-18.

Nick Watson took two good catches and a wicket.

OVs first XI look to demonstrate their Division Three promotion potential at leaders Harborne thirds on Saturday (1pm).

A third century of the season from captain Osman Fiaz secured an eight-wicket win over relegation-threatened Malvern at New Road.

Fiaz made an undefeated 109 as OVs chased down the target of 219 with seven overs remaining.

The 31-year-old, currently on 866 runs, could become the first member of the club to pass 1,000 in a season since Nick Major in 2010.

Malvern opener Lewis Hill made an excellent 93 and was well supported by Rob Perrins with 34 as the visitors posted a respectable 218 all out.

Charlie Lamb picked up 3-50 and there was another promising spell from 15-year-old Max Richardson, while Ian Robinson (2-26) also helped tie Malvern down.

Chris Drew (41) and Andy Bell (37 not out) played supporting roles to Fiaz as OVs made sure of a comfortable victory.
