THE IDENTITY of the player who struck twice in Worcester City’s 2-1 victory over Leamington might be shrouded in secrecy.

But after proving the difference in a fractious affair at the Phillips 66 Community Stadium, it’s likely City’s fans will hear a lot more about the mystery man in the coming weeks.

The attacking midfielder, who was making his first appearance for Worcester, staked his claim for a deal with a performance full of speed and trickery along with a valuable eye for goal.

After a promising start, he opened the scoring on 24 minutes when he burst into the box before firing his effort in off a Brakes defender.

His turn of pace was causing the hosts’ back four all sorts of problems and he grabbed his second moments before the break.

After carving out some space in the penalty area, the trialist, wearing number seven, then curled the ball into the top corner to make it 2-0.

With less than a week to go before the Blue and Whites kick off their Vanarama National League North campaign against Harrogate Town, his display will delight manager Carl Heeley, who has yet to finalise his squad.

A striker, a centre back and a left-back also put their cases forward for contracts, with the latter unnamed trialist looking particularly assured.

But it was the two-goal speedster who stole the show along with Ebby Nelson-Addy who was a menace throughout.

The 23-year-old, who played for City in the 2013/14 campaign and had a loan spell at the club last season, was released by League Two side Hartlepool United in May.

And he could provide another attacking threat for Worcester this term if Heeley can get the former Aston Villa trainee on board.

Since going out of the Worcestershire FA Senior Cup with a whimper to Redditch United, Heeley’s men’s performances have improved.

However, there were still signs in the second half at Leamington that there remained areas to work on as the hosts began to get a foothold in the match.

Some sloppy defending from City allowed the Brakes to have two shots on goal before Ryan Rowe hit the back of the net.

The former Worcester striker applied a simple finish after Courtney Baker-Richardson played the ball across the six-yard area.

Although Ahmed Obeng missed a good chance to level the scores, City, with Graham Hutchison and Tom Sharpe teaming up at centre back, were able to keep their noses in front.

Tempers flared late on when Nelson-Addy and Ross Oulton clashed in the middle of the pitch before the latter was yellow carded for a rash challenge on the Worcester player.

But the away side kept their cool and saw out the remaining minutes for a third straight win in pre-season.
