VETERAN Reg Barnstable turned in a fine performance to comfortably win the latest Swan Angling Club contest on the high wall section of the canal at Stoke Works.

Drawn just before the start of the wall, Barnstable used breadpunch offered into the deeper centre channel to take a two pounds bream along with smaller skimmers and half a dozen plump roach.

He pulled the scales down to a creditable 16-14-0 match-winning weight.

Club bream expert Rich Brewer took the runner-up prize when he put a skimmer and roach weight together on worm from a mid-section peg to secure 7-6-4.

Third-placed Nick Vaughan’s hempseed caught a small roach net of 3-1-9 which narrowly beat Mike Higginbotham’s 2-15-0 bream and perch catch.

The next Swan club contest is on July 31 at Tibberton.

n Droitwich Spa ace Chris Ballard managed to tame a difficult river Avon at Twyning when he beat a good turnout to win his club’s latest encounter.

Finding himself on the downstream section peg 9, Ballard had no hesitation in targeting small fish on a pole and groundbait set up to take skimmers, roach and perch for a winning catch of 6-7-0.

Second place went to Harry Harrison who used chopped worm on his peg 31 in order to weigh in 6-3-5 of eels and perch.

Harrison narrowly defeated Craig Hobbs who put 47 tiny skimmers on to the scales from peg 11 to achieve 6-3-0.

Pete Chance, Mike Salcumbe and Mal Galliers all secured section wins.

The next Spa contest is on July 31 and will be a team-of-four event on the same venue.
