A FINE all-round display from Martin Woodward led the Fossils to a hard-fought six-wicket win against touring side Eden Park.

Woodward delivered a superb spell of 2-8 from seven overs and then bagged two catches in restricting Park to 112-7.

When Fossils batted, Woodward top scored with a good 35 and was involved in a stand of 62, with Dormy Cook who made a solid 32.

Batting first, Park were lucky not to lose a wicket from the second ball as Howard Clay had a good shout for lbw turned down.

In his next over, Clay had James Jones removed for just three.

Glynn Thomas (2-11 from six) bowled well from the road end and, after 35 overs, the Park’s innings finished with them on 112-7.

Only John Finch (30) got into any sort of form against the Fossils attack.

Fossils made a poor start, losing Graham Thorne (0) and Liz Dean (2) with only seven runs on the scoreboard.

Cook and Woodward then took control and, with a steady supply of singles, the hosts ground out another win.

Meanwhile, the Fossils battled to a draw against Worcester’s Old Vigorians in a match which raised money for Acorns and St Richard’s hospices.

Batting first in the 35 overs-a-side game, OVs were initially restricted to 92-5 from 20 overs.

Peter Tudge (1-15) and Cook (1-23) both bowled well for the Fossils.

Clive Lamb top scored with 39, while a good partnership of 49 between Eddie Bergoyne (25) and Glyn Painter (24) pushed OVs final score to 187-7.

Fossils had a terrible start when Bill Wood, Nigel Price and Keith Middleton all departed for ducks.

Colin Hobbs made a good 42 and Thomas hit a quick 22 but Fossils fell behind the scoring rate as the younger side’s fielding started to show.

Cook (52 not out) and Woodward (9 not out) saw the Fossils home to a draw, finishing on 143-5 from their 35 overs.
