WORCESTER’S Angel Place will be a frenzy of sporting activity tomorrow when teams battle it out for cricketing honours.

West Mercia Police, Modus, Worcester City Council and Santander will be among teams competing in the first-ever Worcestershire Street Sixes from 2.30pm.

Worcestershire Ambassadors’ team is being managed by County skipper Daryl Mitchell, who will try to turn former club cricketers and non-players into match winners.

The soft-ball event is being hosted by Worcestershire Cricket Board and supported by Quality Solicitors Parkinson Wright.

It will bring businesses together to raise funds to take cricket into disadvantaged communities, where young people have limited opportunities.

Kevin Powell, from Worcestershire Ambassadors, said: “This initiative allows us to help promote cricket across the county and have some fun at the same time.

“I would like to say we are in training, however, our pre-match preparation was watching Worcestershire defeat Warwickshire last Friday.”

Worcester City Council’s team is called Worcester Wildcats Team and will include Worcester Nomads skipper Ben Schiffmann and experienced duo Jabba Riaz and David Sutton.

West Mercia Police’s team is being managed by Doc Holliday, while Jerry Reakes-Williams will be aiming to roll back the years with his bowling.

West Mercia Police’s Mark Chappell said: “We will have our two most senior officers playing, including Supt Kevin Purcell, and also a number of new student officers.

“There's some seriously big hitters in the opposition teams and I'm looking forward to the day and watching the play unfold.”

Santander are also excited about tomorrow's fast-paced action but Max Westwood admits their training regime “has left a lot to be desired”.

“With the exception of one player, our team hasn’t picked up a cricket bat since school,” he said.

“We’ve entered the competition with the hope of having a good day out rather than the expectation of winning.

“Our only keen cricketer is Rebecca Everitt who played throughout university and has joined a local team."

Laura Bligh says Modus group’s team will have players joining from Harrison Clark Rickerby’s, ISO Quality Services Limited and Sight Concern.

“Having sponsored and created the website and branding for the event we had a little taster of what the day will be like when we were taking promo shots of a few of us playing cricket in Angel Place with the main sponsors of the event,” she said.

Sutcliffe & Co’s Doug Kaye believes his side might be “dark horses” in the event.

“We have identified the free cake as the main event and we’re shaping up very nicely," he said.

“None of us currently play cricket so that makes us dark horses. I used to play regularly, but that was over 20 years ago, so my arm is a little rusty.”

Team Sanlam’s Kevin Robinson said: “We are a financial planning business and will be playing our take a risk card where we need to.”

And Andrew Leschallas, from Andrew Grant, said: “I’m hoping we will be able to be reasonably competitive, but there are only two of us who could be classed as experienced cricketers.”
