WORCESTER’S Old Elizabethans Swifts were crowned Worcestershire Cricket Board under 11s girls champions after beating Astwood Bank in the final.

On the way, Swifts beat Droitwich Spa, Belbroughton and Earlswood.

The city team have won all their competitive matches this season.

The inaugural finals day at Droitwich was the culmination of the league season with 11 teams going for the title.

Fine bowling by Swifts saw off spirited batting from Bank.

OE’s Simon Murphy said: “I am delighted for our girls. They have been together for three years and have worked really hard, so it’s great to see them earn and enjoy some success.”

Jon Hancock, of the board, said: “A big thank you to Droitwich for hosting this inaugural event.

“It’s great to see so many under 11s girls playing cricket across the county. At last count, it was 100 with over 70 of them at this event.”

Mike Wallis, junior chairman at Droitwich, said: “It’s great to be able to support Worcestershire’s women’s and girls’ programme.

“Given the huge support we had on the day, you can certainly see why cricket is one of the fastest-growing female sports.”

Other clubs competing were Himley, Oldswinford, Ombersley, Barnards Green, Pershore and another team from OEs.
