ATHLETES and young sports stars of the future are to receive a series of grants at a glitzy ladies’ day at Worcester Racecourse.

Sports charity CG5, founded to promote participation in sport, are providing financial backing to six more talented young people.

Along with Worcester jeweller Anja Potze, they are hosting a day at the races on Tuesday, August 30, when the next round of recipients will be revealed.

Steve Edwards, a trustee of CG5, said: “Sport plays an essential role in the development of young people, not just their physical wellbeing, but their life skills too.

“These latest awards are about helping young people to develop their talents to their fullest and unlock their enormous potential.

“CG5 are extremely grateful to Anja for her generous sponsorship and support and to all the people who have worked so hard to make these grants possible.

“Ladies’ day promises to be a lot of fun but also a chance to celebrate and showcase the very best in young sports people in the county.”

The race day starts at 4pm and gates open at 2.30pm. Tickets are available through cg5.org.uk.

In line for funding are talented competitors, including young Shropshire golfer Jack Dirkin.

The six-year-old is United Kingdom number one in his age group and ranked 32nd in the world.

Dirkin was newcomer of the year in the 2015 Energize awards.

The August grants will take the total number of grants awarded by CG5 so far to 17.

They are managed by a group of trustees in Edwards, Worcestershire businessmen Simon Secretan and Rob March and former Worcester Warriors lock Craig Gillies.
