WORCESTER City amateur fighters bagged gold, silver and bronze medals at the Hull Box Cup Junior Championships.

The three-day competition attracted the best young boxers in England with teams from Scotland and Ireland also taking part.

Junior Worcester welterweight George Butler beat Alan O’Halloran of Five Star ABC on his way to the final.

Butler stayed on the front foot throughout the contest, scoring well with fast combinations.

In the final, Butler met Tim Rivers from Earl Shilton for the second time in his boxing career.

Their first encounter went the way of Rivers on points but Butler was determined not to let that happen again.

The much-improved Worcester boxer kept the pressure on his taller opponent throughout the contest.

Rivers tried to keep him at long range but battling Butler powered through and smashed home hurtful right hands and solid left hooks.

Rivers was warned for a low blow in the second but it did not slow Butler down.

He continued the onslaught right up to the final bell where he got his just rewards and was presented with the gold medal for his performance.

Junior featherweight Owen Cooper unanimously outpointed Tom Ellsmore of Clayton ABC in the semi-finals.

The tall and rangy Ellsmore tried to keep Cooper at long range but struggled with the pace and intensity from the Worcester boxer.

Fast jabs and solid work on the inside sealed Cooper’s place in the final.

His opponent in the final was the experienced Tom O’Driscoll of West Ham.

With more than 70 bouts and several national titles under his belt, O’Driscoll started strongly and countered well against the aggressive Cooper.

Accurate and hard punching from the West Ham boxer built up a solid lead going into the third.

Both boys gave their all in the final round and O’Driscoll deserved his gold medal as he was awarded the bout on a unanimous decision.

Worcester schoolboy Layton Butler got off to a great start by outpointing Steve Rossington of Hornchurch ABC.

Accurate punching from Butler booked his place in the semis against Ben Miller of Hull ABC.

Fast combinations from Butler had the local lad on the back foot for the majority of the bout.

Hard jabs and straight rights from Butler continued throughout the contest.

Miller replied with the occasional counter-punch but Butler looked good value for a spot in the final.

But the judges had other ideas and awarded the decision in favour of the hometown boxer by way of a split decision.

Millar then went on to win gold in the final.
