FOUR Worcestershire golfers swung into action with a marathon six rounds in one day to raise money for charity.

Wharton Park captain Steve Owen teed up the challenge with the help of fellow members Rich Knowles, Wayne Boden and Jim Sylvester.

The quartet, playing in a foursomes format, unleashed their first drives at 5am and sank the final putts some 13 hours later after playing 108 holes with nine birdies, 115 pars, 77 bogeys and 15 double bogeys.

They walked a total of 120 miles at the Bewdley course and raised nearly £3,000 for Owen’s nominated charities, the Motor Neurone Disease Association, Alzheimer’s Society and Help for Heroes.

Each player chalked up 30 miles and the best score was a three-over-par 74 with the average round being 79.

With atrocious weather forecast, the quartet were relieved to see fine weather prevail and play was wrapped up at 6.22pm.

“It was a fantastic effort as there were a few tired legs and swings towards the end of the day but we’re delighted to have completed the challenge and raised money for the chosen charities,” said Owen.

“I’d like to say a special thanks to Di and Mandy for keeping us fed and watered through the day and also to Joe Wier.

“He did a fantastic job of keeping the course clear for us to play through other golfers, keeping our spirits up, finding balls, flag tending, raking bunkers and providing loads of words of encouragement.”

A further charity fundraiser quiz is taking place at Heightington Village Hall, near Bewdley, on Friday at 7.45pm.
