SWAN AC members enjoyed good sport on the canal despite heavy boat traffic.

The best catch went to confident Paul Wilson, who made the most of his end peg above Blackpole bridge where he won last year’s contest.

By starting in the centre channel with red maggot, he soon landed four bream.

A slow period saw Wilson add small fish from the reed beds before a late run of perch and another bream gave him a winning 13lb 6oz 4dr.

Keith Hunt, on the other end of the same pound nearest the lock, took a pair of bream on bread punch, one more sample and perch on maggot weighing 10-5-7.

Third-placed Sue Jaques’ mixed 6-3-2 bag of bream and silvers fell to bread and maggot.

Section winners were Martin Hunt (5-2-9) and Rich Brewer (5-3).

The next Swan contest is at Stoke Works on July 17.

With the River Avon running low and clear, the big bream at Twyning are a distant memory with Droitwich Spa AC members taking on a small fish approach.

Ex-Worcester national star Mick Salcumbe was the only one to catch a bream early on the feeder from peg 37 and, added to a few small silvers, won with 4-12-9.

Runner-up was Gary Summers with a small fish peg 16 catch of 3-15. Third was Harry Harrison with 3-5-5 followed by John Moloney’s 2-13-5 weight.

Section winners were Alan Baldwin, Kevin Downton and Simon Wheeler.

Spa return to the venue in two weeks for their next contest.

Venue regular Dave Warren won his second consecutive Friday Fishponds contest with an ide and bream catch of 27-6 from peg 13 on groundbait and pellet.

Baughton’s Bill Hartland came second with a similar net from peg 25 going 20-3.

Third was Richard Oliver with 19-8 and fourth came Len Merrill with 16-6 of shallow-caught ide.

River prospects: With the river season now well under way, the Severn is still carrying some colour and continues to produce good bream weights to an open-end feeder approach.

The Avon is now running low and clear with hempseed fishing for roach being the best tactics.
