A NEW junior cricket competition inspired by Twenty20 is set to take place at Malvern College next week.

The College is hosting an Eight8 tournament on Sunday, June 17, for 10 prep schools.

Competing for the Tolchard Trophy, it will involve around 100 boys in a series of quick matches of eight overs a side.

The trophy takes its name from former Leicestershire and England batsman Roger Tolchard, until recently a coach at the college.

Tolchard was renowned for being the arch exponent of stealing impossible runs in his playing days and has spent the past 22 years passing on his expertise to generations of young cricketers.

Refreshments will be provided on the day and there will be a picnic area. Teams will also be wearing special coloured clothing.

An exciting day is expected and the occasion will climax with the Tolchard Trophy being presented to the winning school by Lord MacLaurin, the former chairman of the English Cricket Board.
