BRETFORTON batsman Paul Jones produced a scintillating 121 not out to help his side triumph over Colwall by one wicket in the npower Village Cup.

Jones smashed eight sixes and eight fours from just 68 balls to drag Bretforton past their 225 target despite being on 130-7 at one stage.

His efforts booked the Cotswold Hills League Premier club a regional semi-final date against Crusader Worcestershire League Division One basement side Eastnor on Sunday.

The 30-year-old, who sent several shots out of the ground and across Station Road, also wins our cricketer of the week award, earning him a £30 voucher for the Fearnley Factory Shop.

He said: "It's up there with the best innings I have ever played and the best game I have ever played in.

"It was very satisfying afterwards. There were probably 100 people watching and one guy said he would have paid to watch it, which was quite an honour."

After posting 224-5, Colwall looked to have the game in the bag with Bretforton struggling to keep up with the run-rate at 90-5 from 20 overs.

But right-hander Jones entered the fray at number five and took the game by the scruff of the neck.

Everything bowled at him flew off the bat and edged the hosts towards their total but they were still 25 short with five overs remaining and needed 14 from the last two.

The ninth wicket fell with eight balls to go and Jones was left facing Colwall bowler Charlie Griffiths for the final over.

With the fielders patrolling the boundaries, Jones tied the scores with three twos in a row.

He then despatched a high six as the field moved in to save the single.

Jones said: "We were out of it at seven down. There was a lot of pressure because we always want to try and do well in the Village Cup. We got through it in the end but it was good because Colwall are strong and the wicket was turning.

"Colwall showed how to bat with ones and twos but I just smashed it. It's worked before and it worked then."

Jones, who has been involved in the sport for 17 years, also scored 70 the day before in Bretforton's 132-run league victory against Alcester and Ragley.

He said: "I had 70 on Saturday but that was completely different.

"The wicket on Saturday was a little bit wet but it dried out for Sunday and the score showed that."
