OMBERSLEY cemented their sound start to the season with an easy victory and the maximum 24 points over visiting Wombourne in Birmingham League Division Three.

They stay just one point behind the leaders St George's ahead of Saturday's trip to Olton and West Warwickshire.

The visitors won the toss and decided to bat but the game was in effect decided in the first hour as opening bowler Duncan Catterall decimated the visitors' top order.

Catterall accounted for the first four wickets as Wombourne struggled to just 21 in the first 15 overs.

Home spinners Nick Dale-Lace and Neil Slade kept the pressure on with a combined total of 37 overs for 110 as Adrian Shermer and Neil Grant tried to rebuild the innings for the visitors with a stand of 99.

Wombourne closed their innings on 169-7 and they needed early wickets to get back in the game.

However, Joey Robinson and Phil Burdon kept up their good early-season form with an opening partnership of 44.

This was followed by a quick-fire 59 from Aussie Simon Mason, which included 12 fours, and a responsible 23 from Tom Brain.

They settled the match in favour of Ombersley by seven wickets with 20 overs to spare.
