OUTSIDER Von Origny sprang a surprise in the Men's Open race at the Albrighton Woodland point-to-point meeting at Chaddesley Corbett on Bank Holiday Monday.

Punters had seen the six-runner race as a toss-up between Lough Ennel, sent off as favourite, and previous course winner Caught At Dawn.

But, as Caught At Dawn faded at the third-last fence, it was 14/1 shot Von Origny, ridden by Oliver Greenall, who took the lead. Lough Ennel went on to blunder at the last and Von Origny scored by three lengths.

Owned by Greenall's father Lord Daresbury, who was a former champion jockey, Von Origny was scoring for the first time since leaving the yard of trainer Henry Daly.

The Ladies' Open went as expected to the odds-on favourite Watchyourback and rider Claire Allen but they were made to fight all the way by runner-up Euro Bleu before winning by a length-and-a-quarter.

Sixteen-year-old Tewkesbury schoolboy Sam Drinkwater scored his first win when he partnered Gulabill to win the concluding Maiden race, while previous course winner Harum Scarum followed up his Maiden win with an easy seven-length win in the Restricted Open race.
