WORCESTER City amateur boxers were in action at the annual Worcester Rugby Tournament.

Starting the show was Worcester schoolboy Jordan Jenkins, who faced Joss Bond of Graisley ABC.

Having lost on points in a previous encounter, Jenkins knew he needed to give maximum effort and did not disappoint.

A constant work-rate with both hands soon built up a lead with Jenkins using good footwork to evade Bonds' counter-punching.

A solid performance with sharp left jabs and fast rights was enough for the judges to award the local boxer a unanimous points win.

Schoolboy Richard Ballat was unlucky not to come away with a victory when he faced Ross Cooper, of Lions ABC.

Ballat produced the neater boxing skills but Cooper refused to take a backward step and scored well with left and right hooks.

At the final bell, the judges gave the bout to Cooper on the narrowest of split decisions.

Jon Roberts stepped up against the more experienced Midlands champion, Brandon Harper, of Wednesbury ABC.

The Worcester junior found it hard going in the first with Harper's long punches finding their target early on.

Roberts got going during the second and forced Harper against the ropes with fast hooks and hard right hands.

Constant pressure right up until the final bell from Roberts was enough to secure a narrow points win in a super crowd-pleasing contest.

Fifteen-year-old Ed Morris produced the best performance of the evening in Worcester colours to defeat Liam Willsher, of Wednesbury.

Boxing behind a sharp jab, Morris scored well and displayed wonderful counter-punching against the aggressive Willsher.

There was no let-up with both boxers punching themselves to a virtual standstill.

Senior members of the club were not so successful. Most noticeable displays came from Ali Yousaf and Sam Francis.

Welterweight Yousaf received two standing counts in the first round against Elliot Sharpe, of Graisley.

But he refused to give in and battled all the way until the end of the bout when he was defeated on points.

Heavyweight Sam Francis fought hard against a raw but talented Wednesbury boxer in Scott Davies.

When boxing behind a strong left jab, Francis controlled the bout well but got drawn into a two-fisted battle with little or no defence.

With straighter punching and lest rest periods, Francis could quite easily have reversed the narrow points loss.
