THE Worcester rowing regatta was blessed with excellent weather, good support and success for several local clubs.

In near-perfect conditions, hundreds of well-wishers and interested spectators watched dozens of closely-contested races between clubs from across the country.

Racing upstream over 750 metres from the city's road bridge to the rowing club, more than 60 men's and women's crews from as far away as Oxford and Christchurch provided a fitting spectacle to an event that has been held in the city since 1845. The ages of the participants ranged from just 12 to over 60.

There was a hole host of winners from Worcester Rowing Club, including in the men's, women's, juniors and veterans categories - demonstrating the strength in depth of the club.

Other local clubs that enjoyed great success were Bewdley and Stourport.

All the winners were presented with a commemorative tankard as a reward for their achievement. The highlight of the day was the inaugural relay race between clubs from Stourport and Bewdley.

Never held before, four crews from each club raced each other in quick succession.

After a closely-fought battle, Dave Marchant brought home the spoils for Bewdley.

Regatta secretary Steen McCollin was very pleased with the backing shown for the event.

"Without the crews, spectators and helpers taking the time to come and support the event, there could not have been a regatta," he said.

"Everyone at the club is looking forward to hosting our next regatta in September."
