OMBERSLEY picked up their second Birmingham League Division Three win of the season by beating promoted Kington.

The villagers welcomed back captain Joph Young from honeymoon for his first game of the season.

Young won the toss and inserted the home team on a drying wicket. This was the most decisive moment as whichever team bowled first were immediate favourites.

Kington struggled to cope with the conditions and accurate, effective bowling from the experienced Ombersley pace attack.

They lost batsmen at regular intervals with Simon Mason (2-26) and Duncan Catterall (4-22) sharing the first six wickets for just 48.

Spinners Neil Slade (3-27) and Nick Dale Lace (1-16) cleared up the tail and Kington were all out in 38 overs for only 99 in just over two hours.

None of Kington's experienced Herefordshire Minor Counties batsmen got a start and it was left to overseas player Gamage to make an impact with 41, including two sixes and three fours.

Wicketkeeper Simon Caple added 27 as Ombersley put on an excellent show of catching and ground fielding.

Rain interrupted the Ombersley reply as the Kington bowlers strove to make an impact.

The conditions looked as though they may save the home team as more than 90 minutes were lost. But Phil Burden (27) and Joey Robinson (21) batted with maturity and diligence to take their opening partnership to 54.

They both departed and were followed by three quick wickets but 15-year-old Sam O'Neill hit the winning runs as Ombersley prospered by five wickets, making 100-5.

Adam Herbert bowled 17 superb overs for Kington, taking 3-39 and producing eight maidens.

Ombersley Seconds beat Kington by 50 runs, while the thirds won their first Crusader Worcestershire League Division Seven match of 2007 by six wickets at old rivals Chaddesley Corbett.
