WORCESTER’S John Moloney chose an all-out bream attack to win the 32-peg Droitwich Spa Angling Club fur and feather contest on the canal at Porters Mill.

Drawn in the third section, Moloney had an exceptional start when his groundbait and caster approach down the centre channel produced a run of good bream to 3lbs in the first three hours.

The shoal moved to the adjacent peg, leaving him struggling for bites in the final part of the contest but his weight of 12lb 11oz 8dr was enough to secure top prize.

Chris Ballard fished next to the winner and capitalised on the shoal’s movement, taking around nine skimmers before the end for the runner-up spot with 9-3-8.

Third place went to the consistent Ken Legge with 6-0-4 and veteran Tony Hamilton continued to impress with 5-8-8 to beat the fifth-placed Harry Harrison’s 5-1-5.

Section winners were Tony Brunn, Mal Galliers, Dave Anderson and Colin Davis.

Browning’s Kane Woodfield won the WDUAA canal open from the Flagge Meadow section with 6-5-6 of perch on worm and caster from peg one.

Second place went to Mick Samson (Greenman) with another all-perch net of 4-3-12.

Third came Chris Senter (Shakespeare) with 3-7-10 and fourth was Droitwich’s Rob Francis weighing 2-12-13.

Pole fishing was out of the question in blustery conditions encountered by 30 competitors in a Moorlands Farm open on the Meadow, Bank, Moors and Island pools.

Dave Williams (Halesowen RBL) used straight-ledger tackle with banded pellet for an all-carp 75-13 from Bank peg 14 to win by one ounce.

Pete Rice (Bag’em Baits) was second with 75-12 ahead of Geoff Morris’ 45-8.

Over 50s open: 1 G Garnish 62-12, 2 M Watson 55-10-0, 3 A Espry 51-13-0; Sunday open: 1 N Groves 81-2, 2 K Roderick 69-1, 3 A Morrison 61-3.

If the mild weather continues and rivers are flooded, anglers wanting a change from canals and carp lakes can try Redditch Borough Council's Arrow Valley Lake.

Forty-pound nets of skimmers and bream to 3lbs are winning open contests.

A straightforward open-end feeder approach with groundbait and maggot cast to around 40 yards can produce bites and permits are available on the bank.
