WORCESTER City’s lowly league position is giving a ‘false’ illustration of how well they are doing this season, according to player-coach Deon Burton.

Back-to-back wins over Boston United and AFC Telford have helped the Blue and Whites move off the bottom and climb up to 16th in the Vanarama National League North table.

After beating Brackley 2-0 in the FA Trophy last weekend, Burton insisted Worcester were playing better than their placing suggested as they were hovering just one point above the relegation area.

“I think the team are doing very well at the moment and truthfully I believe they are in a false position,” he said.

“Since I arrived at the club, they have shown that as we have played a lot of teams above us and always seem to do well against them. We got a nice away win on Saturday against Brackley, so hopefully we can take our form into the next game.”

Worcester face a Tamworth side unbeaten in their last six games on Saturday but Burton said they had no reason to be ‘afraid’ of their seventh-placed opponents at The Lamb Ground (3pm).

“It is going to be tough as they are towards the top of the division for a reason but we seem to have done a lot better away from home, so that might be a bonus for us,” he said.

“Winning also breeds confidence and we have got to keep that momentum going.”

The 39-year-old, who has played in the Premier League with Derby County and Portsmouth, said he had been impressed with the make-up of Carl Heeley’s and Matt Gardiner’s squad.

But Burton, who is also part of the coaching set-up, said his side just needed to improve the consistency of their performances.

“We are down there at the moment but we have still got a few games in hand,” he added.

“There is a lot of talent in the squad, so it is just about believing and keeping that consistency.

“It is OK doing it in patches but if we can keep that standard of play going at a high level as often as possible, then who knows (where we will finish).”
