FIGHTERS from Droitwich Amateur Boxing Club have enjoyed a successful spell.
Cruiserweight Dave Jenvey, 22, boxed for Midland Counties against Southern Counties at Bedworth in the pre-quarter final round of the National Senior Novice Championships.
Jenvey defeated Mike Matthewsian, of Golden Ring, Southampton, in the contest for boxers with 20 bouts or less.
Against an opponent with a formidable reputation, Jenvey took control in the second round and constantly caught Matthewsian with solid combinations.
The Southampton boxer resorted to grabbing and holding and after three warnings was disqualified.
Jenvey is now through to the national semis on May 26 as his opponent in the quarter-finals has withdrawn.
Three Droitwich boxers took part in the National Golden Belt Championships in Coventry for boxers born in 1990 who have had 10 or less bouts.
Frankie Butler, Liam Walsh and Charles Delve all took part in tremendous contests.
Butler and Delve won Midland Counties titles and secured their places against North West Counties in the pre-quarter finals.
Butler's bout with Peter Holt, of Nechells, Birmingham, had everything - powerful punching, deep commitment and no mean skill.
Both boxers were given standing counts as they strove to impress the judges and they received a standing ovation from the crowd at the conclusion of the contest.
Butler deservedly took the decision after a barnstorming final round.
Delve found himself against a strong, aggressive opponent in Peter Osmanovic, of Pleck, Walsall.
Relying mainly on his accurate jab, solid punching and astute ringcraft, Delve constantly beat Osmanovic to the punch and cleverly avoided the hooks coming his way. He too put in a grandstand finish to secure the verdict.
Walsh was forced to go up a weight and lost on points to Leslie Lashley (Nuneaton).
The Droitwich boxer gave it his best shot and played a full part in a hard, entertaining contest but the weight and power of his opponent were the decisive factors.
To conclude a memorable week for Droitwich boxers, 11-year-old Josh Turner travelled with a West Midlands team to Maesteg, Glamorgan, to take on a Welsh Select.
Turner boxed superbly to win by a unanimous decision in his bout against Nathan Jones.
