LEDBURY Charity Sevens saw the hosts team reach the plate final only to lose 15-12 to Apache.
After the withdrawal of several teams at short notice, the others braved appaling conditions that got worse as the day wore on.
Hartpury pulled off a surprise victory over last year's winners Sanurai in the group stages, while Ledbury made the Army work hard for their victory.
In the group stage, there were no real surprises as The Army, Birmingham, Bridgend, Bristol, Hartpury, Samurai, UWIC and Wanderers went through to the last eight of the cup.
In the plate, the sudden withdrawal of Aberavon gave Ledbury a straight route to the final.
But colleagues Ledbury Cannon Fodder were demolished 70-0 by Stourbridge.
Ledbury ran Apache close in the plate final and will rue the unforced errors that allowed their opponents back into the game.
In the cup, Hartpury ran out of steam and the Army team struggled with the conditions, allowing Wanderers to storm into the final.
Fielding a number of Welsh internationals, they beat Bridgend 36-12 in the final.
