OUR start to the season has been a big let-down and - like our supporters and the readers of the Worcester News - all the players, support staff and everyone at the club is feeling disapointed by the lack of success.

However, we are all determined to sort it out. The ball is firmly in our court and we will work at sorting things out as a group.

I know they are old cliches, but the season is a marathon not a sprint and the trophies, champions and relegated sides are never decided in April.

It is all about recognising what is required and keeping the belief we have in ourselves and there is no reason why the guys should doubt that.

Obviously it has been difficult for us with injuries to some of our key players, but that is what squads are all about.

Any of the players who come into the first XI know they have a job to do and that is what our squad is built around.

We would have loved to have had Matt Mason and Doug Bollinger in our team at Headingley, but that wasn't to be.

Hopefully, when they get back to full fitness, we will have levelled off these poor results and will have started to rise up the table and they can come back into the side and add to that.

They have both had muscle tears and that kind of injury takes a while to recover from, but both of them are coming along nicely.

There still isn't a date for their return to action yet, but the reports we are getting from the medical staff and the strength and conditioning guys are very positive.

It shouldn't be too much longer now until we have them both back in the middle.

We have the likes of Richard Jones and Stuart Wedge as back-up in the bowling department but, at this stage, they are both making sure they are taking wickets for the second XI.

The important thing for them at the moment is to have a good season in the seconds and put themselves forward for a place in the first team if the opportunity arises.

Also, we will be in talks with Dewald Nel shortly, but at this stage he has just joined us for the short period of the game at Headingley and this week's game with Lancashire at Old Trafford.

He bowled really well at Leeds and I couldn't have asked for more from a guy making his debut for the club. Even though we didn't score well, it was a good batting pitch at Headingley and Dewald did well to pick up his wickets.

Finally, former Worcestershire coach Tom Moody has left Sri Lanka to coach Western Australia this week.

It is the right move for Tom at this stage as he has been on the roundabout of international coaching with Sri Lanka for a couple of years He is very much a family man and this will be a good opportunity for him to spend more time with them.

However, he is a good coach and I'm sure he will work at the top level again some time in the future.
