NEMESIS, from Division Three of the Worcester Table Tennis League, beat Himbleton A' from Division Two by 15 points in the final of the team handicap knockout.
Although in different divisions, there was in fact little to separate the two teams in the league as Himbleton finished bottom of their division while home side Nemesis finished runners-up.
With those league positions and some tight handicapping, it promised to be a close contest, especially as the handicaps would only be revealed at the end.
Richard Cullis got the hosts started with a 21-6 score over penholder Dave Rothero, only to find that Rothero turned the tables with 21-14 in the second game. John Rowe and Ray Rennison then helped Him-bleton to assert their higher position with good wins over Bill Smith and Ray Davies.
But Cullis held Nemesis in a good position, beating Rennison 21-10 in the first set only for the latter to fight back with a 21-10 reversal in the second.
Himbleton number one Rowe gained some valuable points from Smith for the visitors to forge ahead, but Ray Davies took some important points from Rothero to once again swing the tie in favour of the home team.
In the penultimate event, Rothero made a great start against Smith, wining 21-10, but had to hang on in the second to win 23-21.
Without the teams knowing what the difference was in handicap, the final event began between the respective number ones.
Cullis did well to beat John Rowe 21-19 in the first set and improved on that score, winning 21-16, to ensure Nemesis won.
