PAUL West believes Evesham United's Worcestershire FA Senior Cup success is the icing on the cake of a season to be proud of.

The Robins won the county competition for the first time after beating Stourbridge 2-1 in extra-time and on aggregate in the second leg at St George's Lane.

Mark Owen scored on 97 minutes after his second-half penalty had cancelled out Leon Broadhurst's opener to hand Evesham their first piece of silverware for 13 years.

Despite the disappointment of losing to Bromsgrove Rovers in the Southern League Division One Midland play-off semi-finals, Evesham have had a season to remember.

They lost just eight games in finishing fifth in the table, the best in the division, and saw off Redditch, Kidderminster Harriers and Worcester City to reach the county cup final against the Glassboys.

In addition, they bagged more than £10,000 by reaching the third qualifying round of the FA Cup and first round proper of the FA Trophy.

Boss West, who has been at the club for a decade, said: "I am more than happy with the season. If someone had said to me at the start what we would achieve, I would have taken it.

"I certainly can't remember having as much success in all competitions. I am absolutely delighted and proud of the players."

West also thought victory over Stourbridge typified the fighting spirit his side has shown during the campaign.

He said: "We started really slowly and seemed to have a bit of a headache from the Bromsgrove game, which I thought would be a problem.

"That game was tough on the players but they showed their character to bounce back.

"As we have all year, we stuck at it. We kept going and got our just rewards. I don't think the performance deserved to win the game on Monday but I think we deserved to win the cup overall with who we beat on the way.

"It was the icing on the cake for the season."

The manager believes his players can take a lot of credit from their exploits over the past nine months and, after letting their hair down, can build on that next season.

West added: "The play-offs are always a lottery. It was a great achievement to get there. We would have liked to have gone that one step further but hopefully the players have learned from it.

"It's the presentation night on Friday. We are going to enjoy that night and have a break to recharge our batteries for an assault on the league next year."
