JIM Troughton - the grandson of former Doctor Who actor Patrick Troughton - all but exterminated the Worcestershire bowling attack with a career-best 162 as Warwickshire piled up a healthy lead on day one in LV County Championship Division One.
Fed a plentiful diet of juicy half-volleys throughout the day, England batsman Troughton helped himself to 27 boundaries in his fine innings - many of which were elegant extra-cover drives.
Already a bowler light with Matt Mason still sidelined by a shoulder problem, the hosts were dealt a huge blow when opening bowler Doug Bollinger withdrew after picking up a hip injury in practice.
Richard Jones came in for the Aussie left-armer to make his County Championship debut.
Despite Kabir Ali's excellent opening burst of 2-10 off 10 overs, the Bears recovered from 3-2 to close the day on an imposing 385-5.
Director of cricket Steve Rhodes acknowledged the home bowlers had not executed the plans set out for them before the game well enough, but was optimistic of his side staging a fightback.
He said: "If you take it back to the first session, Kabir bowled a particularly good spell and made life difficult for the batsmen when there was a little bit of moisture in the pitch.
"But in the afternoon and evening sessions the pitch had dried out and flattened a bit but we didn't sustain decent areas and didn't bowl well enough to hold the Warwickshire batsmen at bay.
"It was a big blow to lose Doug before the game, especially with Mason out, but it was a good opportunity to blood one of the youngsters, Jones, and it was good experience for him. Hopefully, we can now take advantage of the ball moving around early on and take the remaining wickets quickly. We will be looking to get in there, pile on the runs and get somewhere near their score."
Kabir and Nadeem Malik caused plenty of problems early on but, as conditions improved, Troughton and his colleagues made batting look easy as the New Road attack toiled in the afternoon sunshine.
Kabir removed Ian Westwood lbw for two and then accounted for Darren Maddy who scratched around for 25 balls without scoring.
Troughton and Jonathan Trott put on 79 for the third wicket before a Jones inswinger removed Trott's middle stump.
Jones put down a tough return catch offered by Troughton when the batsman was on 82.
Alex Loudon made an attractive 45 before bottom-edging an attempted hook to make it 195-4.
Warwickshire's in-form wicketkeeper/batsman Tim Ambrose and Troughton continued the assault, putting on 154 for the fifth wicket.
Troughton's fine innings was eventually ended when he pushed forward to a Gareth Batty delivery and feathered a catch to Davies with the score on 349 but Ambrose remained unbeaten on 110 at the close of play.
