KIDDERMINSTER Victoria progressed to the second round of the Graham Williamson Trophy with a solid 88-run win over Shorpshire-based outfit Newport.
The Birmingham League's cup competition gives a good run-in to the season, which commences on Saturday, May 5. KVCC opened their innings with skipper Jonathan Wright and Mark Mansell and they put on 81 before the latter was caught for 28.
Wright made 69, but wickets continued to fall and Kidderminster were struggling somewhat at 127-5.
However, Andy Siwicki and Sean Lloyd restored order and they both made 63 as their side posted a competitive 273-6 from 40 overs.
Newport also enjoyed a good start to their innings, putting on 84 for the first wicket, but were always behind the required rate and finished their reply on 185-5.
Matt Brace (2-28) and Mansell (2-31) were the pick of the KVCC bowlers.
On Sunday, KVCC are playing at Fordhouses in the first round of the National Knockout Cup (1.30pm start).
Kidderminster will hope to do better than last year when third division side Wombourne knocked them out in the opening round.
