WORCESTERSHIRE crushed last season's finalists Lancashire in a rain-affected Friends Provident Trophy contest at Old Trafford.

The Royals were always on top in a shortened game and were propelled by 66 from opener Stephen Moore and three wickets for nine runs from pace bowler Kabir Ali.

Worcestershire were handed the 122-run victory when the hosts were finally bowled out for 90 in the 26th over in pursuit of a Duckworth-Lewis target of 213.

Moore's 86-ball effort was the backbone of a healthy 182-4 which would have been far more if they had been able to complete their full allocation of 50 overs.

The revision edged up Lancashire's target and it was always going to be a struggle from the moment Kabir removed the dangerous Mal Loye for one in the fourth over of their reply.

Moore got the visitors up and running early on in an opening partnership of 80 with Australian Phil Jaques.

The pair were only split when the Australian was caught behind by the diving Luke Sutton for 35 off the bowling of Glen Chapple in the first over back after the rain break.

Moore carried on, reaching his 50 off 65 balls, until he was bowled by Lancashire's best bowler Steven Mullaney.

Royals captain Vikram Solanki took up the mantle of chief run scorer, hitting an entertaining and elegant 43 with two boundaries and a straight six included.

But once he was bowled by Steven Croft, the innings just ambled along until the second rain shower curtailed the innings after 42 overs.

There was time, however, for the 20-year-old Mullaney to pick up the prize scalp of Graeme Hick for six.

When play resumed Loye was the first of three victims for Kabir, as he and Aussie left-armer Doug Bollinger shattered the top order.

Lancashire crumbled to 26-5 inside 10 overs, with four out of the top six batsman not making it past one.

There was no doubt that Worcestershire made use of the best bowling conditions, but Lancashire's lack of experience also cost them.

The home side were missing four first-team players through injury or suspension, but that should not detract from what was a fantastic performance from the well-drilled Royals.
