STEVE Rhodes has vowed Worcestershire will employ the same style of aggressive, attacking cricket that won them promotion last season in Division One this year.

The New Road director of cricket believes that is the only way to play the game these days.

Since the County Champion-ship changed from 12 to 14 points for a win, fewer teams are happy to play defensively for draws.

He said: "The points system was changed because of what was happening in Division One - people were playing for draws and stacking their teams up with batsmen to get plenty of runs and it was boring cricket.

"If you look at last season's Division One, there were a lot more wins and the sides that got the wins and occupied the top positions, but the guys who were drawing games were towards the bottom of the table.

"We played positive and aggressive cricket last year and I see no reason to change the way we play because I think it brings the best out in a lot of characters in our dressing room.

"We will play a similar positive style this year - we will concentrate on the basics and playing well.

"It doesn't matter what division you are in if you play cricket well.

"If you are allowed to play cricket well, then you can get on top in matches.

"The time when you don't play well is generally when the opposition have got you under the cosh and the pressure is on you.

"If we play good cricket, then we will dominate the opposition.

Rhodes added: "The extra points available now makes it more akin to playing aggressive cricket."
