WORCESTER City Women are hoping they can emulate Coventry Copsewood and win promotion next year.
Paul Hennessey's side were resigned to finishing runners-up in West Midlands Division One South after losing to the leaders two weeks ago.
Their misery was compounded when they lost their last game of the season 2-1 at home to Hereford Pheonix over the weekend.
It was only the team's third setback in 18 games, following two defeats against Coventry.
It left Worcester just two points behind the champions from Warwickshire, who have still to play their last leaguie fixture.
Despite missing out on promotion, captain Vicky An-drews said it had been a good season and has set her sights on going one better with the club next year.
She said: "It has been a successful season but at the same time I am really disappointed that we let it go so late on.
"We lost against Coventry twice but they are the best side in the league.
"Coventry finished second last year and won it this year so it could be our turn next year."
Kate Draper scored her first goal of the season to put Worcester ahead against Hereford but the hosts, missing several players, conceded either side of the break.
Andrews said: "After the Coventry game we knew we couldn't win the league so the game didn't mean anything. Whatever happened we were going to finish second.
"It was difficult to be motivated but it would have been nice to have finished with a win. Hereford are a good side but I was a bit disappointed to have lost."
