WE have played good cricket this season and to get our first win against Somerset in LV= County Championship Division One was satisfying.
The victory showed we can compete against the coun try’s best players and teams.
Hopefully, we can carry on our good form against Mid lands rivals Warwickshire at Edgbaston.
Looking back at the Somerset fixture, which we won by an innings and 62 runs, we bowled well to dismiss them for 250 on the opening day.
We had a 70-30 split in favour of bowling first on the opening day. Bumpy and I were in favour of having first use of the new ball.
When we sat in the dressing room and watched the rain hammer down just after the end, it was nice to know we had the points in the bag.
We were sorry to lose Ga - reth Andrew beforehand through a back injury but Joe Leach grabbed his opportunity with both hands.
He was unfortunate to have missed out in the first two matches but has definitely cemented his place now.
In reply to Somerset’s first innings, we made a steady start as Alex Gidman laid the foundations with 78.
Ben Cox and Leachy gave us momentum with a 160-run seventh-wicket partnership.
Their stand put us in control and it was an excellent achievement to get 152 runs in front at the turnaround.
Ben hit 109 and we know he is capable of getting crucial runs. His glove-work is up there with the best.
He’s batting at number seven, which is a crucial position in the order. You can often be batting with the tail, which is never easy.
There was a lot of moisture and cloud cover around when we bowled in Somerset’s sec - ond innings, which made it ideal conditions for us as we dismissed them for 90.
Charlie Morris removed Marcus Trescothick in both innings and it’s nice to see someone as good as Tres back in the pavilion quickly. He has been a fantastic player and is Somerset’s talisman.
If you can get Tres out early, it can send shockwaves through Somerset’s dressing room.
The feature of Charlie’s bowling was his immaculate line and length. It’s early in the season but if Charlie can keep up his form he won’t be far from the thoughts of England’s selectors.
It is a busy week because we play a four-day match with New Zealand at New Road from Thursday.
They are a strong outfit and should have their stars back from the Indian Premier League. It’s good for our fans to see the likes of Trent Boult and Brendon McCullum.
It’s a challenge against the Kiwis because, for most of us, it’s the closest we get to playing in a Test match.
