HEREFORD United are still keen to snap up the services of out-of-favour Crewe Alexandra striker Luke Rodgers.

The 23-year-old has already turned down a move to Edgar Street after a £30,000 bid was submitted by the Bulls.

Rodgers' reluctance to drop down a level from Coca-Cola League One is believed to be the chief reason behind his decision.

League Two rivals Accrington Stanley are also interested in luring the former Shrewsbury Town forward away from Gresty Road.

However, Hereford first-team coach John Trewick is confident a deal could still be agreed when the transfer window opens on Monday.

Rodgers has made 12 appearances for Crewe this season, seven of which have been as a substitute, and scored three goals.

Trewick said: "There's an interest from ourselves and from a number of other clubs. We need to continue talking to Crewe and see where it takes us.

"He's quick and he scores goals so he would be a good addition if we could get him but it is up to Luke Rodgers."

In the meantime, Hereford host Wrexham on Saturday (noon) looking to continue their good run over the Christmas period.

Tim Sills gave the Bulls a 1-0 victory at Notts County last Friday, a result that was followed up with a 0-0 home draw against Bristol Rovers.

Trewick was pleased with the performances, which yielded four points from a possible six, and the way the players bounced back from the 3-0 defeat at Shrewsbury on December 16.

He said: "I suppose before a ball was kicked we would have settled for that but they were two solid performances.

"It was a great result up at Notts County and it was a good point against a decent Bristol Rovers side in a game which we could have won. Things didn't go as we wanted at Shrewsbury and the players responded."

Wrexham are eight places below Hereford in the table but the Dragons have avoided defeat in their last three games against Rochdale, Darlington and league leaders Walsall.

"They are below us but the table is very tight," Trewick said. "They have got an experienced manager in Denis Smith and they are no mugs.

"It will be a tough game but if we can perform like we did in the last two matches we will be fine."

Striker Andy Williams is unlikely to figure as he continues to recover from a throat infection, while defender Dean Beckwith completes his three-match suspension following his dismissal against Shrewsbury.
