OUR back-to-back defeats at the weekend were disappointing after such a good start to the season — especially the loss against Plymouth Raiders when we didn’t perform anywhere near how we have in previous games.
That was a surprising display and I definitely see that as two league points dropped.
We then had to go from that result up to play all-conquering Leicester Riders in the BBL Cup at their tight, intimidating gym.
We looked more like our usual selves at Leicester but the result came down to a 60-second breakdown in our defence.
We didn’t want to come out and play like we did against Plymouth again as we would lose — we need to show more composure, especially having been 14 points up at one stage.
It was just one league game and we just need to move forward now and maintain our focus.
We are also out of the cup after losing to Leicester, but the competition is a bit of a lottery as it depends which half of the draw you are in and our side was always going to be tough.
The other half of the draw was much easier, so I am not too fussed about going out as I want to concentrate on the league.
This weekend we have long away trips to Sheffield Sharks tomorrow (7.30pm tip-off) and then to Glasgow Rocks on Sunday (5pm).
We won’t be able to stay up there, though, so it will be off to Sheffield on Friday, back home to Worcester, then up to Glasgow on Sunday.
We have a fair bit of travelling to do this weekend, but that is just the way it is with basketball and we will be playing two very good teams this weekend.
Sheffield are six and one in the league so far this season, so I am expecting a challenging game. They have some very good players, but if we play as we can, especially defensively, we have a good chance of winning up there.
It will then be an early start on the team bus on Sunday for the trip to Scotland and we will be up against probably the most experienced team in the league but, if we can recover well from Friday’s game at Sheffield, we are capable of beating them.
The goal for this weekend is very much to get two wins, but we have to take something from these games.
It would be a mini-disaster to come away from this weekend with nothing.
We have already watched the tapes of last weekend’s defeats and there are several things we can put right quickly.
Meanwhile, Will Creekmore was named player-of-the-month for October and I was named coach-of-the-month, but the awards turned out to be a kiss of death for us as we lost our next two games!
Joking aside, it is always nice to win awards, but I would be more excited if we are still receiving them at the end of the season having won the league.
