AFTER years of enjoying an armchair ride behind Munster’s dominant pack, Paul Warwick admits he is having to learn new skills quickly at Sixways.
The Worcester forwards have often come off second best in matches this season, leaving the back-line desperately trying to feed off scraps and slow, messy ball.
However, at 31, Warwick, who starts at fly-half against Bath tonight (7.45pm), remains more than happy to add strings to his bow and hopes to use his experience to help Warriors.
He said: “You find out what type of player you are when you are going backwards.
“I don’t think we’ll be a monumental pack this year, so that will really give me an insight into how I’m playing and aspects I need to work on.
“It’s not ideal as a 10, but we’re in it together and it’s not a backs and forwards thing. On the whole, our back-line has performed quite well and if we can take a bit of slack off the forwards, that would help.
“We probably haven’t carried as directly as we could and that’s one part I’m in control of, so this week we’ll sort that out and go forward there.”
Warwick added: “There are a lot of aspects that we haven’t portrayed that we have spoken about, but the biggest one is an emotional response.
“We’re off the mark in terms of physicality too, but that’s an individual responsibility rather than a coaching aspect. We just need to front up as a team and I can’t put my finger on why that hasn’t happened.
“It’s frustrating because you can see it within us, but we are not translating it to the matches, which is obviously what we are judged on, so it is fair enough that the supporters are on our backs. We have made the situation for ourselves, though, so it’s up to us to get out of it.”
