EVERYONE connected with Worcester Wolves are ecstatic to be top of the British Basketball League with four wins from four.
Looking at the fixtures at the start of the season, if we had won three of the them we would have been very happy so winning all four is fantastic.
I am really pleased with what the team have done so far. I don’t think that we’re playing anywhere near our best basketball but the fact is we’re winning and while we’re winning that’s good.
I also think the two over-time games we had last week against London Lions and Cheshire Phoenix were mammoth games for us.
I think they’re going to have a great significance come the end of the season and I’m delighted to have come through them.
The guys showed fantastic character, believing in what we were doing and playing to the final whistle.
Both opponents gave us an opportunity to win the game and we gladly took it.
In my 15 years of coaching that’s the first time I’ve been involved in two over-time games in 24 hours and it was really tough on the players. It shows the work we’ve been doing with our strength and conditioning coaches, sports therapists and nutritionists is starting to pay off.
You’ve got to be in shape to do that and I thought we did a great job.
The London game, which we won 63-62, was brutal and very physical and, as a result, we weren’t sure if Zaire Taylor was going to play on the Friday against Cheshire.
But he’s a winner and there was no way I was going to be able to sit him out.
Cheshire shot the ball really well but winning 94-90 also proved to us that we could score which was fantastic.
Defensively, I think we were a step slower because of the night before but we stuck to it and executed our offensive moves.
We also had another good crowd against Cheshire of around 1,000 people which is more than 50 per cent up on what we had last year.
That’s the kind of thing that will help us if we are in overtime games and the fans played just as big a part in that win as the players did.
We host Manchester Giants in the BBL Cup tomorrow (7.30pm).
