ALEX Grove has provided a fascinating insight into life in the Warriors camp under Dean Ryan’s regime and insists the results will begin to turn in Worcester’s favour.

The Scotland international, who is returning to full fitness after missing the start of the season with a groin injury, made his club debut way back in the 2006-07 season, so has seen a lot during his Sixways career.

Despite that, the 25-year-old insists Warriors are finally heading in a whole new direction with the appointment of Ryan and his extensive coaching and backroom team.

“This is the first time the club have shown ambition to really change, that’s how I feel about it,” said Grove.

“The personnel they have brought in and the degree of change they have gone to shows a real intent to change.

“In the past, they may not have done that and changed a couple of people and expected the whole thing to work.

“Outside people may think, ‘Oh, we did this three years ago’, but this is the first time the club have really changed tack and done something different.

“The message Dean keeps giving us is that if we want to change as a club, we have to change our behaviour as players day in, day out. In the first five weeks of the season, behaviour has changed for the better. Everyone is being challenged and probably before we weren’t being challenged as much as we could have been — by each other and by the coaches.

“Because we haven’t adapted in the first five games of the season, it may look a bit concerning, but as a group we are confident we have the right people in charge and are doing the right things.

“As soon as we can adapt what we are doing on the training field into games, we will be fine – we certainly haven’t hit panic stations.

“The whole coaching staff are new, they all bring different things to the table and complement each other, but it takes time.

“The performances should probably have got better already, especially against Newcastle when we let them bring the game to us rather than imposing ourselves on them early on and killing them off.

“All the players are confident with what’s in place and I think that if an outsider was to come into the club, they would be blown away by the professionalism and the way people go about their work.

“If you keep doing the right things over and over again, then you will get results, so we have to persevere.” Grove said: “For some players — and I’d put Chris (Pennell) and myself in that bracket — it’s the first time we’ve been exposed to this level of coaching.

“If you put certain players in certain environments, you get the best out of those people and I think Chris is an example of that.

“In this environment, we are just starting to get the best out of him, that’s really encouraging and with another eight months I think he’ll be even better.

“I’m really excited about coming back from injury and I still believe I am learning and can give a lot more.”
