IT is amazing to think that tomorrow Worcester Wolves will play their first ever game in the new University Arena.
I remember when I first drove past the site on Hylton Road and it was still the old market place and just a pile of rubble.
I was told that was where the new arena was going to be but I’d heard that story many times before at other clubs so for it to be actually here and be such a fantastic facility is great for the club, the university and also the community.
Hopefully we’ve got a team this year that’s going to do the facility justice and have a good year.
We have got almost no excuses now not to really push on from where the club has been. I think we’ve got some real quality players in the side and I feel that they have experience and toughness.
I don’t know how it’s worked out that we’re playing Leicester Riders in the first British Basketball League match in the arena but taking on the current champions is great.
The stage is set for something fantastic and magical to happen.
I know teams are going to walk in here and think it’s a fantastic environment to play basketball in and I know that when I was playing and went to a nice facility you raised your game so it might play against us a little bit.
But it’s our court and we want to make it a fortress like we did the sports centre so we will be doing our level best to make sure that happens. I think people are going to enjoy the way we’re going to play this year.
We have already set ourselves some targets for the season and the first part is always about winning enough games to make the play-offs at least.
We want to be getting into at least one final this year if we can and so we’ll concentrate on the BBL Trophy and Cup as well.
The targets are set and we will look at those at the end of each month to see how far we’ve come and whether we’ve achieved what we wanted.
There has been an atmosphere of expectancy in training this week. We did what we had to do against Surrey but this week has been very focused, discussing how we want to play against Leicester and what’s going to be our best tactic.
It’s been very much a team process which is good and having Zaire Taylor here, he knows a lot about how they play so that’s going to be very useful.
We’re really excited and right now it’s the calm before the storm so we’re looking forward to tomorrow.
