DROITWICH Tennis Club have further improved their facilities by installing two more new all-weather courts.

During the summer, the St Peter’s Church Lane club replaced two of their tarmac courts with synthetic grass surfaces to allow members to play throughout the year.

Following on from that successful move, they have now done the same to two other courts, leaving them with four artificial and four tarmac surfaces.

The latest development has come at a cost of around £25,000 and has been funded by the club.

Men’s captain Neil Bates said: “These courts are a great addition and a massive boost for all of the members, providing all-weather tennis at the club for years to come.”

By having a choice of surfaces, players have the option of using the faster artificial courts or the slightly slower tarmac surface.

Bates added: “Another advantage of the four new courts is that they have greater all-weather properties and can be played on in all but the most extreme weather.

“This improves the prospects of much more winter tennis being played, and also helps to reduce the potential cancellation of matches through the winter months, which can cause problems as they have to be rearranged.”

The courts were officially opened last Sunday with a celebratory mixed doubles tournament.

Elsewhere, the South Warwickshire and District Area Summer League have secured a sponsorship deal for 2014 after two years without one.

It will be known as the Wildmoor Spa Summer League after Anthony Bird, owner of the Stratford health club, backed the competition which was founded by the current secretary Corin Bishop 24 years ago.

They started with only seven men’s teams and now have 45 playing in six divisions alongside 24 junior sides in six pools.

Fixtures will begin on the week commencing April 14 and the annual meeting is on February 25.
