WORCESTER City take on Workington at Aggborough tomorrow (3pm) as their search for an overdue victory continues.

Carl Heeley’s third-from-bottom team have failed to win any of their first eight Skrill North fixtures and are one of only two sides — the other being Oxford City — yet to triumph this term.

It has not been for the want of trying and Heeley believes his players are giving their all every time they step on to the field.

The former centre-half was critical of the team’s defending in Tuesday’s 2-2 draw against Gainsborough Trinity when substitute Ethan Moore rescued a point with a late penalty.

But Heeley was full of praise for their effort and is certain they will break their victory duck soon.

“We can try and swap it around and improve the quality, because we know it’s going to be tough, but it’s frustrating at the moment because we feel the players are there but we’re shooting ourselves in the foot too often,” he said.

“We need a defensive display like last Saturday against Colwyn Bay and to get a couple of goals — I know it sounds obvious but that’s what we need.

Heeley added: “A win will come, I’m sure.

“It’s easy to say they have lost confidence but my experience of a lack of confidence is you have players hiding and not wanting to get on the ball. In the first 25 minutes against Gainsborough that wasn’t the case but we undid ourselves defensively and it cost us.

“You could just see the belief drain away a little bit but we came back and got ourselves level. But then we shot ourselves in the foot again before coming back and getting a point so we’ve got to give a bit of credit to the players.

“Yes, we can be critical of things that have happened in the game but we kept going and got our rewards for it.”

Defensive midfielder Richard Taundry is a doubt to face the Cumbrians after going off with a groin strain against Gainsborough Trinity.

Right-back George Williams suffered suspected ankle ligament damage at Colwyn Bay last weekend and remains a concern, as does midfielder Ebby Nelson-Addy (groin).

But centre-half Richard Munday has recovered from his hamstring problem and fellow defender Shabir Khan is available again following a three-match ban.

“Hopefully, we’ll have a spell in the season when we don’t get any injuries but it’s not really helping us at the moment,” Heeley added.

Seventh-from-bottom Workington lost 3-1 at North Ferriby United on Tuesday night after beating Gloucester City 4-2 at Borough Park last Saturday.
