WORCESTER City boss Carl Heeley was critical of his side’s defending in the 2-2 draw with Gainsborough Trinity.

City twice came from behind to salvage a point in the Skrill North encounter at Aggborough, including Ethan Moore’s injury-time penalty, but they were guilty of their own downfall at the back.

Exodus Geohaghon’s mistake led to Rhys Oates putting the visitors ahead and Oates made it 2-1 after City had failed to stop Conner Richardson bursting down the left wing and playing him in.

Heeley said: “You can change the players but we are going to find it difficult to win games when you concede goals like we did. You can’t legislate for individual errors and I thought defensively it was littered with errors.

“The golden rule is you don’t let the ball bounce as a defender and it bounced too often and caused us a lot of problems.

“We went to Colwyn Bay last Saturday and defended superbly as a team with no errors and the result is you keep a clean sheet and don’t look like conceding.

“This was the flip side of the coin and it was a poor defensive display.”

He added: “I think the effort and commitment is there, you can’t accuse us of not working hard enough, there’s nobody shirking, we’ve just got to eliminate or reduce the errors because we have conceded some sloppy goals at times this season.

“That game was there to be won. I thought Gainsborough were very positive but individual errors can’t be legislated for and they punish you.”

Moore ensured a point after being bundled over in the box and scoring the resulting penalty five minutes into stoppage time.

City also had a case for another penalty seconds later when fellow substitute Aaron Williams went to ground following a challenge by keeper Phil Barnes but referee Martin Dexter waved play on.

Heeley said: “You get some decisions and their gaffer didn’t think it was a penalty. All I know is, Ethan Moore’s a goalscorer and if could have stayed on his feet he would have done because there was an opportunity to score.

“The referee has called it as a penalty but I think the second one that we didn’t get was more of a penalty than the first one.

“Some go for you and some go against you but I think it would have been harsh on Gainsborough if we’d had got both penalties and won the game in injury time.”

He added: “I expected Tom Thorley to take it but he just said Ethan was confident, wanted the ball and he stuck it away comfortably.”
