DEAN Ryan has appealed for Aviva Premiership officials to give Warriors ‘a fair go’ after seeing his Worcester side lose a game to yet another marginal late refereeing decision.

Tim Wigglesworth blew for Warriors killing the ball after a line-out with just four minutes left and Ian Humphreys slotted the resultant kick to seal a 20-18 win for London Irish.

Warriors’ director of rugby Ryan referred to the newly-introduced independent audit that has been jointly funded by the RFU and Premier Rugby to assess and report back on the officiating in every top-flight game each weekend.

The new system has been approved by the Professional Game Board and former referee Geraint Ashton Jones has been hired as an independent consultant to evaluate any repeat errors being made by certain officials.

“The independent audit system it flagged up massively that we were right to feel unjust in the last 20 minutes at Leicester last week,” said an irate Ryan.

“I can’t wait for the new one to come through for this week. All I’m saying is ‘give us a fair go’ because there’s some decent football going on and if we can manage those key periods we’ll do OK. If we can’t, then life’s going to be tough.

“That was the second week in a row when I think there has been some random refereeing and we were at home on Saturday, so you would expect random refereeing to start to favour you.

“I think there’s an element of it where there’s a perception that we’re indisciplined and there’s an element that we feel that too.”

The game was a stop-start affair with Wigglesworth regular referring decisions to the TMO or consulting with his touch-judges.

One such incident saw the big screen used after London Irish winger Marland Yarde appeared to throw a punch at Ignacio Mieres in the aftermath of the Exiles man scoring a try.

Ryan’s sarcasm on the issue was tangible. “I don’t care if Yarde threw a punch or not,” he snorted. “There’s TMOs here, TV screens and three officials – if we can’t get an answer after a five-minute tea break about it, then how the hell am I supposed to get an answer? We couldn’t get an answer last week on a citing (Dan Cole’s alleged bite on Mieres) and we couldn’t get one again this weekend.

“I thought Mieres was great. They clearly thought he was great too as they felt he needed a bit of extra attention.”
