WARRIORS’ academy transition manager Sam Vesty insists the youngsters playing for Worcester’s Cavaliers side have a fantastic opportunity to showcase their talents in the Aviva ‘A’ League.

With four more matches on the Cavaliers’ fixtures list, Vesty believes young players can make a big claim for a first-team spot.

Cavaliers lost to Gloucester United on Monday evening, but Vesty felt that there were a number of positives to take from the game.

He said: “The ‘A’ League is the shop window for finding young talent. Dean Ryan and all the coaches come to watch, so it is an opportunity for these young guys to perform well and get noticed and break their way into the first team.

“It was a tough game at Gloucester, but some of the younger guys did well. There were some very positive aspects from the game including some flowing moves from the backs.

“We made some changes at the break and came out and played a lot better. In the first-half, we weren't decisive enough and didn't impose ourselves on them, but in the second period we showed glimmers of what we are capable of.”

Cavaliers travel to Northampton on Monday for their second ‘A’ League game of the season and Vesty is hoping the younger players will build on their Gloucester performance.

He added: “We’ve got matches on most Monday nights over the next couple of months for some of the young guys to demonstrate what they can do.

“It is a chance for these guys to show what they’ve got and fans should definitely come and watch if they get the chance as there will always be some quality players in action.”

Meanwhile, Ryan was happy to see hooker Chris Brooker come through 30 minutes for the Cavaliers at Gloucester following a knee injury.

He added: “Chris is a project to bring back after being out for 20 months with a horrific injury – that’s a pretty dark place for anyone in their career.

“His body was screaming at him after not playing for such a long time, so we did the right thing in giving him half-an-hour and he’ll play again for the Cavaliers this week.

“We won’t rush him, but if we can get Chris back, we will have an ex-England senior EPS hooker and I’m delighted with his progress.”
