IF ever there was an example of a player finally making the most of their potential it is Kiddermin-ster Harriers’ Nathan Vaughan.

The goalkeeper was a surprise acquisition by manager Steve Burr in December 2011 after being sacked by Evesham United due to a poor disciplinary record.

Vaughan’s career with the Robins, then in the Southern League Premier Division, was never far from controversy, although his ability was highly regarded.

Burr was quick to sign the 31-year-old as back-up to Danny Lewis and Vaughan has repaid his faith in spades. He made 14 appearances for Harriers last season and was given the nod for last Saturday’s 2-1 victory at Welling United.

Vaughan, who counts Redditch, Plymouth and Newport among his former clubs, will now be hoping to keep the gloves for today’s Skrill Premier match against Hyde at Aggborough (3pm).

Burr said of Vaughan’s performance against Welling: “He’s had to be patient but he did very well. Danny Lewis is a terrific keeper but I thought it was the time to give Nathan a chance and I thought he did very well.”

Assistant boss Gary Whild added: “Nathan probably feels he’s making up for lost time but he’s worked extremely hard to realise his potential and is a true professional.”
